A study of pragmatic motivations of referential metonymy

转喻指称作为指称方式中的一种,在确定指称、识解明义方面发挥着重要的作用。本文在已有研究的基础上分析指称转喻的特征,指出指称转喻是一种说话人指称而非语义指称,进而从命名、词语缩略和创新词汇用法三个方面,探讨言语交际中人们选择使用指称转喻的语用动因,旨在为转喻在线加工和理解提供新的启示。

Referential metonymy as a way of referring plays an important role in reference assignment and explicature derivation. Based on the previous findings, this paper aims to reconsider the nature of metonymy,arguing that referential metonymy originates as a typical case of speaker's reference rather than semantic reference. What metonymy involves is not about the meaning of words, but about what people do with the words to refer to an intended object or person. The pragmatic motivation of referential metonymy are then examined in terms of naming, shorthand and innovative uses of words. The study from the speaker 's point of view is likely to provide some insight into the online comprehension of metonymy.
