The novels of Toni Morrison are best known for their epic-like grand narrative, intense black culture and profound and abundant themes. All the time, though every one of her novels has been interpreted in numerous perspectives, many moot points still remain to be discussed. When exploring the reasons leading up to the failure or the success of the characters' identity construction, most critics just confined their interpretations to the perspectives of racialism, gender politics and narratology. Through close reading, the present paper comes to the conclusion that, being an ordinary act of humankind and tinged with double literary connotations, walking has been frequently used by Morrison in her novels, making it one of the main motifs of her novels; and that the act of walking serves not only as a means of the success of the characters ' identity construction, but also as the cause for their tragedy.
