Process and Mechanism of Chinese Character Stroke System

汉字笔画系统发源于隶变产生的战国晚期,迄于西汉末年,字形上主要体现为篆体的改造。东汉时期,汉字横、竖、点、撇、捺、折六种基本笔画形成。南北朝时期,提画和钩画形成,点画范围扩展,此时全部笔画已经形成,此后部分字形的笔画仍有调整。汉字笔画系统生成的支配原则有二:一是书写便捷,二是整字优先。笔画系统的生成途径分两个层面,一是笔画层面,二是笔画组合体层面。

Chinese character stroke system originated from late Warring States period when theofficial script was produced and completed by the end of Western Han Dynasty. This was terminatedat the end of Western Han Dynasty. The main sign of character formation was the modification of SealCharacters. At the Eastern Han Dynasty, horizontal, vertical, points, left falling, right falling andturning were named six basic shape strokes. At Southern-Northern Dynasties, rising stroke and hookstroke took shape, while the scope of points stroke was extended. All strokes took shape though somestrokes were to be modified. There were two dominant principles in the processing of Chinese charac-ter stroke system, one principle being the conveniece for writing, while the other being the priority ofwhole character. There are two levels in the processing of stroke system, one being the stroke regulation, and the other the stroke-compound regulation.
