Thomas Hardy＇s Jude the Obscure narrates the violation of Victorian traditional ethical concept by the protagonists.It presents us the obstacles that prevent people to pursuit individual personality and true love in transitional period,owing to the influence of conflict between new moral standard and old one.The ethical contradiction between Jude＇s fear of ethical taboos and the pursuit of free love results in his difficult ethical choice,which brings Sue with ethical dilemma.This paper is to analyze Jude the Obscure from the perspective of ethical literary criticism,so as to show the instructing function of the novel.
