法国东方学家、目录学家、地理学家亨利·考狄埃是国际汉学史上举足轻重的人物。其巨著《中国书目》收录了从15世纪后半叶到1920年左右用欧洲语言撰写的有关中国的各种文献的详细信息,更以其长远的时间跨度、巨大的容量、可靠的材料、丰富的语种和合理的编排开创了综合性西文中国书目的先河,成为西方汉学和中国研究不可或缺的参考,极大地推动了汉学这一独特学科的发展。

Henri Cordier, a French orientalist, bibliographer and geographer, was also one of the foremost fig- ures in the history of Sinology. Of the many works he published the most important was his Bibliotheca Sinica, a detailed bibliographical dictionary of works relating to China written in European languages from the second half of the 15th Century to 1920 or so. This initially comprehensive work of reference, which is indispensable to all the concerned of Sinology/Chinese Studies, greatly furthered the development of Sinology, an unique discipline for its long time span, huge capacity, reliable sources, multiple languages and reasonably classifying. 11 refs.
