Objective To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a reproductive health program with participatory learning method among university students in Shanghai. Methods A intervention with participatory learning method was conducted in two universities among freshmen and sophomore students in Shanghai. Participatory activities were used by facilitators who received related training before, such as class meeting, role playing and debating discussion. The impacts of intervention were evaluated by comparing results of surveys before and after the intervention. Results Compared with control group, knowledge scores of intervention group were improved significantly after the intervention, the general knowledge scores were increased by 3.1±0.9 to 4.1~0.7( P〈0.01 ). At posttest, the proportion of those who opposed premarital sex were increased by 32.2% to 45.2% in the intervention group( P〈0.01 ). Controlled for other influencing factors, groupxtime interaction effect in multi-factor analysis was found on the intention of using condoms (OR = 2.519, 95% CI: 1.481-4.287}. The percentage of the students who expressed that they benefited from this intervention was 80.9%. Conclusion This short-term reproductive health program with participatory learning method is welcomed by university students and positively influenced them. But the long-term impact of the intervention is essential to deter- mine whether the observed patterns are sustained or lead to behavior change.
