Natural resources science is an integrated science which studies natural resource systems from the aspects of nature, human society and technology. This branch of science concentrates on the characteristics of formation, evolution, quantity and quality of natural resources, and temporal-spatial distributions in relation to the development of human society. Since 1949, Chinese researchers have carried out large-scale resource research and surveys, bolstering theoretical research and subject construction of natural resources science. In order to explore the current situation and development of natural resource science, we first classify and define the research field from 7 244 samples purified from 13 253 articles, published in Acta Geographica Sinica, Geographical Research, Journal of Natural Resources and Resources Science from 1983-2012. Second, using bibliometrics, these articles were analyzed regarding quantities, research content, geographic setting, methodology and references. Last, we discuss trends in natural resource science such as the unbalanced development of sub-disciplines within natural resource science; that research content will continue to expand and favor sustainable development; that research perspectives tend to integrate just as the combination of macroscopic and microscopic patterns and complementation between regional and global research; research methodology will focus on quantification with the development of science and technology; and that the volume of researchers will increase, especially in middle and western China.
