Coming-of-age is the eternal theme in young adult literary works. American writer Louis Sachar＇s excellent adolescent novel Holes,the winner of the 1999 Newberry Medal Award,exhibits the protagonist Stanley＇s initiating process of stepping into manhood through adventures and ordeals. The unique experiences serve as the inner resources that allow Stanley to embark on a spiritual journey in pursuit of self-development and reach a higher level in both cognition and self-awareness,thus finally accomplishing the transformation from innocence to maturity.
