AIM To study the expression of insulin like growth factor Ⅱ (IGF Ⅱ) and its receptor (IGFR) in differ ent types of liver tissues, and to explore the relationship between them and liver cancer's Edmondson grade and infection of HBV. METHODS The expression levels of IGF Ⅱ and IGFR in 10 normal liver specimens, 28 liver angioma specimens, 13 liver cirrhosis specimens and 42 liver cancer specimens were assessed by immunohistochemical techniques. Their positive rates were compared and the relationships between them and HBV infection, Edmondson grade were studied. RESULTS Positive rates of IGF Ⅱ in normal liver, liver cirrhosis, liver angioma and liver cancer were 10%, 76.9%, 46.4% and 76.2% respectively; the positive rates of IGFR, they were 20%, 92.3%, 64.2% and 61.9% respectively. Compared with normal liver tissue, there were significant differences in the positive rates between the normal and abnormal liver tissues ( P <0.05). In liver cancer tissues, the expressions of IGF Ⅱ were significantly different in HBV positive and negative rates ( P <0.05). So were those of IGFR. The expression of IGF Ⅱ in Edmondson grade Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ, Ⅳ were significantly differrent ( P <0.05). CONCLUSION Expressions of IGF Ⅱ and IGFR are probably involved in the genesis of liver cirrhosis and liver tumors. Their expressions in liver cancer, to a certain extent, are related to HBV infection and Edmondson grade.
