Editor＇s note： Every winter, when Ngari is snowbound, telephone becomes the only way for people here to connect with the outside world. A signal tower built beside Mt. Gang Rinpoche is their only hope to enjoy undisrupted communication. The tower is known by the local Tibetans as ＂life signals＂. In January of 2013, a ceremony honoring ＂online personalities touching China in 2013＂ was held in Beijing. Among the 10 personalities named were Chimed Dorje and Penpa Droma, a Tibetan couple and employees of the Tibet branch of China Mobile Communications Corporation. The two of them live and work year-round watching over the base station in Tarchen Town in Ngari at an altitude of 4700 meters. They are affectionately known as the ＂guardians of the life signals＂. This is their story.
