最近几年,中日关系十分不稳定,但民间交流并未中断。越是官方外交困难的时期,民间交流就显得越重要,更值得重视。小岛康誉原本是日本一名珠宝富商,阴差阳错喜欢上新疆并削发为僧。30多年来,他为新疆发展投入几乎所有的财力和精力,被《人民日报》称为"当代的阿倍仲麻吕"。他积极在日本推介新疆,成为新疆的老朋友,中国的国际友人。他的经历,就是一部精彩的公共外交个人史,对当前的公共外交工作有启发意义。

Although China and Japan have experienced an unstable bilateral relationship in recent years, people-to-people exchanges have never been interrupted. Nongovernmental exchanges are to be highlighted and deserve attention during a tough period of official diplomacy. Formerly a wealthy jewelry merchant, Yasutaka Kojima somehow became converted to a monk upon first setting foot in Xinjiang. Over the past 30 years and more, he has expended energy and made considerable financial contributions to Xinjiang's prosperity. The People's Daily has dubbed him the 'contemporary Abe no Nakamaro'. As an old friend of China and Xinjiang, Kojima has actively publicized Xinjiang in Japan. His experience has culminated in an excellent individual history of public diplomacy that highlights public diplomacy in practice.
