When describing a motion event, people speaking different types of languages are believed to focus on different aspects of the motion and use different lexicalization patterns and syntactic packaging structures. Our focus of interest is whether there is crosslinguistic transfer when adult language learners express motion events with their L2. This paper reports an empirical study on the expressions of adult Chinese L2 learners speaking as 1.1 either a satellite-framed or a verb-framed language, with particular focus on the Path and Manner components of motion. The results suggest that their Ll's typological fea- tures are indeed transferred to their L2 description of motion events. However, Li impact is confined to some aspects of events only and constrained by the learner's Chinese proficiency. The paper ends with a discussion of the implications of the study for L2 teaching.
