On Literary Advocacies and Thoughts of the Jinhua School of Essayists in the Early Ming Dynasty

明初金华文派是一个符合"严格"文学流派要求的古文流派,在文学思想史上具有承前启后的重要地位。他们重视文统的思想纯洁性,重视创作主体的修养论和文法的"辞达"论。金华文派内部"必然"会爆发王绅与方孝孺之争,虽然他们都走儒家内圣外王的传统路线,主张文以载道、齐君化民,但王绅更侧重道的及远,方孝孺则侧重个人道德的提升。

As a school known for its adherence to “strict” rules of essay writing, the Jinhua essayists played an important role in the development of both literary theories and ideology by advocating traditional pure literary ideas, self-accomplishment of the authors and the articulation of their essays. Inevitably, disputes broke out from within. By both sides the traditional ideas of saintly monarchy, kingly government, educative writing and civilized people were advocated, but while Wang Shen emphasized on the far-reac-hing effect of the Tao, Fang Xiaoru emphasized on the importance of individual morality.
