Word order embodies people' s logic and habit of language use. Generally, each part of a sentence can not be arbitrarily conversed. This paper analyzes the differences and characteristics of word order in English and Chinese, and taking the translated novel Before Adam by Prof. Liao Meizhen as an example to discuss the skills. In English, the word order is flexible. It often adopts inverted word order to emphasize, highlight or balance contents, which is less in Chinese. Therefore, in English-Chinese translation, the translator often changes inverted word order into normal one. According to that, Prof. Liao Meizhen adopts several appropriate skills to translate the novel Before Adam. The translated novel not only is faithful to the source text, but also makes the target text fluent, natural and comprehensible and acceptable for Chinese readers.
