It is an issue worthy of exploration whether literatures of two banks and three places(in China's Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan) should go their separate ways or whether they are developments along different modem routes as chosen by Chinese people. To date, nearly all discussions of literary history seem to bias towards the latter, in the divisive mode of analysis, based on one's own views, negative or positive, making it difficult to observe each other's differences in a relatively "complete" historical perspective. This paper attempts to reveal the inner connections hidden in the fictions on either side of the Taiwan Strait that seem full of differences on the surface by observing the politieal-coloured fiction written in the 1950s from the perspectives of how"modernity"was developed on either side of the Taiwan Strait. It is perhaps possible to gain a clearer view of the new historical and cultural structure as reflected or constructed in the 1950s fiction in the veins of modem space. This paper attempts to discuss four novels, respectively by Chen Jiying, Zhou Libo, Zhang Ailing and Ding Ling in a preliminary discussion, hopefully to induce criticism of and deeper attention to these issues.
