On the Theorization of Congruence in Systemic Functional Linguistics

系统功能语言学中的"一致性"概念因缺少严格的定义而受到争议。本文从该概念的早期使用、语言学范畴的难以表述性、意义系统构建的两步骤、意义进化论思想等方面论述"一致性"概念的沿革。笔者认为,韩礼德对"一致性"概念的完善,不在于给定一个具体缜密的标准,而在于构建语义层与语法层的体现关系框架和探究意义潜势得以拓展的过程。

Congruence, as an important linguistic category in Systemic Functional Linguistics （SFL）, has come under criticism and attacks due to its lack of rigid definition. This paper is an attempt to address the theorization of the notion ＂congruence＂ in four aspects： its early use in SFL literature, the ineffability of linguistic categories, the two steps in building meaning system and Halliday＇ s evolutionary theory of meaning. It is argued that Halliday＇ s effort on the theorization of ＂congruence＂ lies in building the realization relationship between semantics and lexicogrammar and exploring how the meaning potential of criterion as to what congruence is. language gets extended, rather than in giving a specific rigid
