稻城县竹鸡顶铜矿位处松潘甘孜印支地槽褶皱系义敦岛弧带南段金沙江超壳型深大断裂带东侧的得荣褶皱带和乡城褶皱带,属川滇“三江”成矿带重要组成之一.出露古生界寒武系～二叠系、中生界三叠系和新生界地层.矿石矿物以黄铜矿为主,少量斑铜矿、孔雀石和兰铜矿,其他金属矿物有黄铁矿、褐铁矿、方铅矿、磁铁矿、磁黄铁矿等.矿石主要结构为：微～细粒结构.浸染状、脉状、网脉状构造为主,块状构造少量.矿体主要产于褶皱带断裂破碎带中.找矿标志为地表岩石发生的岩石次生变化,地球物理地球化学特征异常以及遥感影像中出现的色异常和环形构造.
