A Study on Howard Goldblatt's Translation Strategies

葛浩文的翻译使莫言、贾平凹等作家作品在英语世界得到传播并获得好评。通过对葛浩文译本中翻译语料的考查,探讨中国文学和中国文化的翻译方法,认为葛浩文的译本以忠实为原则,对原作中的文化意象、语言风格等采取厚译、省译、直译等方法再现原作意象,以上翻译方法对传播中国文学有一定的适用性。

Mo Yan, Jia Pingwa and many other Chinese writers＇ works are read and reputed by the world readers with Howard Goldblatt＇s translation. By probing on the translating corpus in Howard Goldblatt＇s translated works, the methods to literary translation and Chinese culture are to be found.It turns out that Howard Goldblatt＇s translation principle is faithfulness. The cultural images,linguistic characters are reproduced in the target language with thick translation, omission and literal translation. Therefore, the above mentioned translation methods can be applied in the translation of Chinese literature.
