The main works of Virginia Woolf show a great concern on the crisis in interpersonal relationships of modern society. They also express the eager of the author to achieve"connection"between individuals. As a rebel of tradition,Virginia has her irreconcilable inner contradictions in both personal life and creation of art. She strongly criticizes the philistinism and hypocrisy of the Victorian. At the same time, she is also deeply attracted by the same culture. On the other side, the contradiction between personal narrative and the"connection"theme which is impersonal cannot be neutralized, either. To solve these problems,Virginia Woolf created two groups of characters known as "hostess"and "female artist". Although they have different lifestyles, their aim to achieve"connection"is the same. The process of misunderstanding of the "hostess"to the understanding also partly reflects the spiritual experience of the author.
