关于“ ”字的构形之旨及所表本义，前贤业已作过较多的考证，尽管多穿凿为说，但亦有智者之见。陈仲甫先生认为：“ ”之构形“象编竹立体之器”，本义为女子“戴器”。其说虽欠中肯，然能与“编竹”联想，已得其管键。本文作者寻仲甫先生思路考之，“ ”字的构形之旨及所表本义豁然而明：“ ”从 从 ，从正面看，象两手抓住竹经、牵引竹篾一层一圈地编织竹篓之形，其字形义（本义）是“竹篓”，引申为：（1）物体的孔洞、窟窿→空无→身体虚弱无力→西瓜瓤败体空→稀疏、稀少；（2）次数多→声音多而嘈杂含混或为数众多而位卑的人；（3）拴系→缠绕→牵曳→环抱→人体矮而背佝偻等。

Much textual research work has been conducted by the predecessors on the form and original meaning of the Chinese character Though most of the viewpoints are too far - fetched to be accepted, a few of them still serve as reliable ones. Mr. Chen Zhongfu holds the opinion that the form of ＂ ＂ is just like a standing bamboo basketwork and its original meaning can be traced back as a kind of wearing for girls. I can＇ t agree totally with his ideas, but the association of ＂bamboo basketwork＂ is simply key to the problem. Following Mr. Chen Zhongfu＇ s thinking way, I came up with a clear idea about the form and the original meaning of the character： ＂ ＂, firmly connected with ancient Chinese characters ＂ ＂ and＂ ＂,looks just like a bamboo basket wov with one hand grasping the bamboo Therefore, the original meaning attrib many derived meanings as following： en one layer after another by two hands tricot and the other thin bamboo strip. utes to ＂bamboo basket＂ and produces a. the holes of a subject; b. emptiness ; c. body weakness; d. a watermelon with a rotten pulp; e. sparseness or scarceness;f, a lot of times;g, a huge tumult or a big crowd of low rank;h. to tie ; i. to intertwine ; j. to draft; k. to surround ; I. a short person with a humpy back, etc.
