Shu ( 殳), one of the heavy weapons commonly used in remote ages, failed to be handed down from the period of Warring States, thus its shape is quite mysterious. Since the Western Han Dynasty, though the hypot- heses forms of ancient shu ( 殳) emerged so often, they generally could not free themselves from the limit of mixing cane - like at all times. However, this paper, on the basis of a thorough textual research on the literatures pertinent to shu ( 殳), arrives at conclusions that firstly, shu ( 殳) is the ancient character for "Chui (椎/锤)", which owes its origin to the recognized inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells, or inscriptions on bronze, in the Shang Dynasty, and secondly, "Zhang (杖)" actually is a loaning expression of shu ( 殳).
