西北大学是近代中国西北地区创建的第一所高等学府,它从创建起就十分重视图书文献工作。抗战时期,国立西北联合大学和国立西北大学在城固9年。图书馆亦在图书委员会和何日章、李永增、周克英三任馆长的主持下,广泛搜购图书文献,加强图书管理利用;并和陕西省立西京图书馆建立藏书共享关系,在很大程度上支持了西北大学在国难时期的教学工作,为国难时期人才的培养做出了贡献,也为抗战胜利后迁回西安积累了丰富的图书资料和服务经验。
