土布业是兴宁特色的传统手工业。鸦片战争之后,中国被迫纳入资本主义世界市场体系,兴宁土布业在引进技术、原料和设备的基础之上迅速兴起。第一次世界大战爆发客观上为兴宁土布业的发展提供了时机,兴宁土布业迎来了短暂的繁荣。近代兴宁土布业是为市场需要而进行的商品性生产,不同于传统自给性的农村副业生产。20世纪30年代之后,由于受到经济萧条和社会动荡的影响,兴宁土布业日趋衰落。
