In the recent years, the Internet,as the representative of new media, with its rapid spread, convenient interaction, low cost, and high participation rate, has opened up a new era of elevated public's right to know, enhanced transparency of the government's work and powerful monitoring of the government's and enterprises' work. While benefiting the government and the public, the new media also brings about great impact to sovereign states' interests due to its uniqueness, especially in western countries which uphold press freedom. We must pay attention to its dual impact on the sovereign states' interests due to its uniqueness. Therefore, this paper takes Wiki Leaks for example, from the perspective of politics and news communication, discusses the new media's challenges on state interests and its role in promoting press freedom.
