Since Singapore opened the port to foreign traders in 1819, a great many Chinese people have left their homeland and immigrated there on their own. By the middle of the 19 th century, the immigrants from China had already made up more than half of Singapore's population. Living in a new environment and often oppressed by the western colonizers, these Chinese immigrants had to stick together and set up many different communities so as to survive. Therefore, the communities were like strong ties which have helped keep the Chinese people in Singapore together, so that they can assist each other and forge ahead together. These communities have indeed made great contributions to the development of the Chinese society in Singapore.
