Steer Toward Me by Fae Myenne Ng tells a sad story about love and law. It concerns not only issues about good and evil and their retribution, loyalty and betrayal, but also the oppressiveness of the State ideology or cultural value during a particular social environment, which form the ethical complex of this novel. Its thematic and artistic expressiveness derives from a construction and untying of this complex as well as the author's efforts in poetically recapturing a particular historical moment. Ng turns an ordinary Chinatown family tragedy into a poignant manifestation of modern ethical dilemma, and thereby displays her deep understanding of the relations between descent and consent in the process of Americanization.
