As a sharp contrast to Walter Benjamin′s Parisian Arcades, Can Xue′s"Yellow Mud Street"seems to reveal to us an anti-modern scenario of a decaying China. Can Xue′s depiction of the Yellow Mud Street residents and their lives re-mind us of a long-held, stereotyped image of China:a"stagnant society".Based on the idea that modernity is a paradox, this paper attempts to employ Can Xue′s novella "Yellow Mud Street"as an example to argue for the complexity of the modernization process in China.
