Body Metaphors in English and Chinese Idioms:A Cognitive Study

人体在人类认知的发展中有着极其重要的地位;人体隐喻是人类认知世界的一种重要方式。本研究采取定量分析与定性分析相结合的方法,从认知角度研究英汉成语中的身体隐喻,并将英汉成语中的身体隐喻划分为四种类型:身体作为源域;身体作为靶域;身体同为源域和靶域;身体部位之间关系与其它事物或人之间关系的投射。

Human body is very essential in their cognition development. Body metaphor is an important means for people to understand the world. By employing both the qualitative and quantitative methods, this article analyses patterns of body metaphors in English and Chinese idioms, and proposes four types of mapping patterns, which are. Body as source domain; Body as target domain; Body as both source and target; and the metaphorical language between different body parts and people and things.
