The invention of transistor is a landmark event in the 20th century.Based on historical facts,this paper describes the process of the transistor from gestation to birth, reviews the contribution by W.Shockley, J.Bardeen and W.Brattain,and introduces the point-contact transistor,the junction transistor and the crystal pulling machine.
