ON AN AWKWARD first date in Beijing's chic shopping district Taikoo Li, a young couple--introduced through a mobile dating app-- runs into a crowd of screaming girls. The object of this mania is none other than Justin Bieber, returning to his lodging at the Opposite House, the Kengo Kuma-designed glass box hotel favored by artsy types, on a skateboard, fully encircled by bodyguards. An image of LA seemingly overlays itself onto one of the quintessential Beijing neighborhoods; the fact that the Beliebers shout in Chinese is inconsequential.
