As an important part of world semiotic studies, Russia develops cultural semiotics on the basis of its unique humanist tradition. In the Moscow-Tartu School led by Lotman, Vetrov gives an elaboration of the content and method of semiotics, and especially the concept of semiotic situation, which provides a new revelation to semiotic studies.
