This paper examines the origins and developments of major insurgent groups operating inside Afghanistan and Pakistan, which are closely related to the US war on terror after the 9 /11 attacks. The complex linkages among various militant groups and external supports, especially a bridging role of al-Qaeda and the Haqqani Network, are under analytical scrutiny. According to the author, external supporting networks are considerably responsible for the survival and strenghthening of the Afghan insurgent movements.
