Exhibited in his poems and prose, Tao Yuanming's (352 or 365-427) adoption of the Zhou Changes was reflected in his emphasis on the motions of Heaven and Earth, the Dao (Way) of the Three Powers (of Heaven, Earth, and Man), and being content with what he was. In his creation of poems and prose, the influence was manifested in his employment of hexagram names, line statements, remarks from Xi ci (Commentary on the Appended Phrases), and his citations of the fig- ures, historical events, and works related to Changes scholarship. Investigation of the background and the trend of thought of his time, his ancestors, teachers, and friends, can disclose the origin of his learning of Changes and the transmission of the Changes, of great significance in the Eastern Jin dynasty (317-420).
