摘要
《三国演义》的英译活动迄今为止已经有近两百年的历史,在现存的各种或长或短的《三国演义》英译文中,罗慕士译本以其突出的学术特点脱颖而出。本文系统研究罗慕士英译活动的学术动机及其发生的理想学术环境。从译作在学术圈的接受情况来看,精准合理而又优雅有力的译文加上极富内涵的副文本使罗慕士1991年全译本成为西方《三国演义》研究中不可多得的珍品,为西方汉学界研究中国古典小说提供了可靠的依据。
Moss Roberts＇ s English translation of Sanguoyanyi published in 1991 excels for its noteworthy scholastic characteristics in the nearly two-hundred-year English translation history of the novel. The translation was produced under ideal academic circum- stances with a pedagogical motive and was warmly accepted by the scholarly readership. The lengthy introduction and annotations make the accurate and elegant versionper sea representative work of Sanguoyanyi studies in the western world and it proves a reli- able source for western studies of Chinese classical novels.
