An Analysis of Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang's First Visit to the Red Cliff Based on Translation Norms Theory

文章从切斯特曼翻译规范论的视角对《前赤壁赋》的杨宪益、戴乃迭译本进行解读。研究发现,译者在翻译过程中,本着忠实传达中国优秀传统文化的精神,主要采用的翻译策略是异化法,在一定程度上顺应了期待规范;而在传达原文的意思和处理译文的逻辑衔接关系时,译者既能做到忠实传达原文大意,也能充分考虑目标语的文本语言规范,符合专业规范的要求。同时,译者在翻译活动中也发挥主观能动性,能够根据具体情况灵活调整翻译策略与技巧,打破特定规范的限制。

This paper employs Chesterman＇s norm theory to analyze Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang＇s translation of First Visit to the Red Cliff. The result indicates that their translation complies with the expectancy norm to some extent, mainly adopting the translation strategy of foreignization in the spirit of conveying excellent traditional Chinese culture faithfully, and that their translation follows the professional norms that the translators should not only convey the meaning of the source text, but also consider linguistic and textual norms in the target language. It is shown that the translators show their initiative in specific conditions to break the limit of some certain norms by adjusting their translation strategy and skills.
