This paper introduces the special construction of “Cypress Pavilion”, once popular in buiJding gardens in the Jiangnan area in the sixteenth century with profound cultural significance. The prototype appeared in Wu Kuan＇s residential garden in Suzhou, and matured in Zhuozheng Garden in Suzhou and Dong Mansion in Songjiang, with a summarization of techniques in the treatise of Zunshengbajian. An examination of its emergence, significance, and disappearance contributes to recognizing the lost characteristics of Jiangnan gardens in the middle of Ming dynasty and better understanding the profound change of garden making in the seventeenth century.
