力图在审视19世纪建筑史学与建筑思想大环境的基础上,重新认识詹姆斯·弗格逊(James Fergusson)——19世纪下半叶英语世界最具影响力的世界建筑史作者,亦是最早的中国建筑的书写者之一。通过对其艺术思想、历史观与世界观的梳理,可以找到他对于东方建筑的认知与价值评判的思想根源。并力图客观地评价他思想中的时代先进性与矛盾性,以及对于后世的东方建筑研究的影响。

James Fergusson, the most influential writer of architectural history of the English-speaking world during the latter half of the nineteenth century, remains among the earliest persons studying Chinese architecture. This paper reviews Fergusson＇s thought and theory, his world view, and his knowledge and understanding of oriental architecture, explicating the origins of his thought, the progressiveness and contradictions of his theories, and his impact on later writings.
