Mark Burry cites the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi as a case who provides the clues to the use of natural (rather than machinic) computational approaches to optimize structural design, By describing Gaudi's source of inspiration and reviewing his representative works which follow the concept 'returning to the source', the intention of the paper is to help sustain the value of observation of the natural world around us and its systems seen through the eyes of Gaudi, combining observation with more intuitively driven design sensibilities thereby placing such strategies beyond exclusive acceptance of the seductive powers of the digitally engaged algorithm.
