Objective To investigate the changes in body mass index, waist circumference and waist hip ratio among new conscripts after 8- week basic military training. Methods 102 new conscripts (67 han ethnic,35 uygur ethnic)of Xinjiang Frontier Armed Police were selected randomly in 2013.Height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, body mass index and waist hip ratio were measured and recorded at baseline and follow- up. Results After 8- week basic military training,to all the subjects,BMI has little change while WHR decreased significantly. Stratification research shows:To the underweight subjects (BMI〈18.5 kg/m2),BMI increased significantly and WHR has little change; to the normal weight subjects (18.5 kg/m2≤BMI〈25kg/m2), BMI has little change and WHR decreased significantly; to the overweight subjects (25 kg/m2≤BMI〈30kg/m2), both BMI and WHR decreased significantly. Conclusion For the new conscripts,8- week basic military training plays an important role in remaking body shape, diminishing accumulation of abdominal fat and building up health.
