The surface text of Willa Cather＇s The Marriage of Phaedra a continuation of the main theme of The Troll Garden,which repudiates the conditions of the male / female,artist / non- artist,realistic world / ideal world binary oppositions. However,these binary oppositions are not a simple juxtaposition. The deep meaning of the story lies beneath these dichotomies,in which the order is suspected and inverted,that is,the later is better than the former,thus reflecting Cather＇s views on marriage between man and woman as well as artist and non- artist＇s attitude toward art.
