A study on Lists of Tribes in Liao History

《辽史·部族表》系元代史臣依其对辽朝部族的认识,杂抄耶律俨《皇朝实录》及陈大任《辽史》相关条目而成。元人修《部族表》的思路为,旧史记载简略者则全取原文,旧史所记繁杂者则予以减省。《部族表》存在将行政单位、地名、人名、族属视作部族等问题,但也保存了不见于今本《辽史》的材料,具有独特的史料价值。

Lists of Tribes in Liao History is the extraction by officials in Yuan Dynasty from Yelu Yan＇s Huangchao Shilu and Chen Daren＇s Liao History based on their knowledge of Liao tribes. The principle to compile Lists of Tribes in Liao History in Yuan Dynasty was to quote all the materials compendiously recorded and cut the redundant ones in the original edition. Even though administrative departments, names of place and person, and races were put under the domain of tribes in Lists of Tribes in Liao History, some of its materials not found in modem Liao History are of a unique historical value.
