This paper research and expound the four aspects of the metadata in electronic document management. The four aspects are the definition of metadata, the function of metadata, the relation?ships with electronic documents and background in?formation,the use of the metadata in electronic doc?ument management. There are the characters of re?search, knowledge and legibility in the paper and strive to help archivists understand metadata and then use metadata based on metadata standard in practical work.
