In 2007, Xiangyang Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology of Hubei Province conducted rescue excavations to five tombs, the M196 and M197 of which were in similar sizes and the same type of brick single-chamber tombs in rectangular plan with vaulted ceiling. In the chamber of M196, brick doors and bracket sets simulating wooden structures were built out of the walls and the murals of scenes of cooking, preparing wine and tea and women in half-open doors were painted on the walls; in the spaces between the bracket sets, the figures of the Four Supernatural Beings and peony flowers were painted. M197 had only six frames painted with red color on the walls of the tomb chamber. Having been looted long before the excavation, these two tombs yielded only a few coins, one pottery bottle, and one porcelain bottle. The tomb structure and the unearthed grave goods showed that these two tombs were that of a couple buried in separate graves in the early to mid Southern Song Dynasty.
