Lacquer painting （the painting of decorations with lacquer [to create lacquerware] widely practiced in China and Japan） has developed quickly in China in recent years, says Cheng Xiangjun, a professor with the Academy of Art and Design of Tsinghua University. When Cheng conducted a study on lacquer painting in 1996, he identified approximately 300 artists who had produced lacquer artworks during the previous 50 years.
“漆画作为新生画种，近年来得到长足发展。”清华大学美术学院教授程向君回忆说，1996年他做课题时，能收录到上世纪以来近50年的漆艺艺术家不过300余人。然而，去年年末在中国美术馆亮相的“大漆艺术-2014海峡漆艺术大展”，自1800多件征集作品中精选280件进行展出，集中展示了改革开放以来漆艺的发展。
