摘要 It is fascinating to envision what may have happened 2,000 ago to initiate a trade connection between the East and the West. Visualize something like a long, thin silk ribbon following a trail from the heartland of China, traversing mountains and rivers and crossing a wide desert, to arrive in ancient Rome. Perhaps this colorful imaginary silk ribbon that spanned thousands of miles was tied in a knot to a flawless piece of Hetian jade lying at the foot of the Kunlun Mountain. There at an oasis called Khotan in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region the trade perhaps began.
