Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch is both a coming-of-age novel with exquisitely drawn characters that follows a grieving boy’s entanglement with a small famous painting that has eluded destruction, and a book that stimulates the mind and touches the heart. The novel shows much preference to many Chinese ele?ments except for American social life, though some Chinese characters are negative and vulgar. This essay atempts to analyse the function and identity of the Chinese elements which represent the escalation of China ’s international status.
