HEC-RAS is a powerful and convenient software for calculating water surface lines ,whice is widely applied in flood control planning at abroad .It’ s principle and calculation method were introduced in detail and the ideal water surface line calculation results of a natural river were obtained in its application to an actual engineering project .The re-sults prove that by using HEC-RAS ,not only the water surface lines of natural river courses in complicated flow-state can be obtained ,but also their flood-control capacity can be judged intuitively .This research is very important for the engineering of flood control planning and the software is worth popularizing domestically .
