摘要
作为维多利亚时代英国重要思想家,约翰·斯图亚特·穆勒在包括政治、经济、伦理等诸多领域产生过广泛影响,但对他的研究往往局限于具体学科领域。本文着重考察他的知识话语,试图从整体上把握他对认识问题的基本看法。文中讨论穆勒在"总体性知识"和"浅表性知识"之间所做的区分、他的"局部真理"和"多面性"概念,基于此种认识观点提出有别于"职业教育"的"通识教育"理念,以及在柯勒律治影响下提出的"哲学家诗人"这个作为智性权威的角色。如果将穆勒进行简约化的学派归类,将会极大削弱他的思想价值,他的折衷主义和反派别主义体现了他在学科分化趋势下进行的整合性努力。
As a seminal Victorian intellect,John Stuart Mill exerted widespread influence over diverse fields,such as politics,economics,and ethics. Mill studies have been mainly concerned with his contribution in particular disciplines. This paper focuses on Mill's discourse of knowledge rather than professional details in order to obtain an overall understanding of his thought. Taking 'many-sidedness 'and 'half truth'as his basic principle,Mill differentiated 'general knowledge 'from 'superficial knowledge '.Based on the former he advocated 'general education'before professional education and 'philosopherpoet'as the intellectual authority. Reductive sectarianism fails to show Mill's mental strength. Eclecticism and anti-sectarianism demonstrate his synthesizing efforts in the sweeping trend of specialization.
