Earlier major biographies of Jane Austen were written by her family members, the main outlines of the novelist's life and personality being all there in Austen-Leigh's Memoir. Deirdre Le Faye's A Family Record came out in 1989,a most meticulously accurate account, making not only the use of family papers, but also drawing on research of her own into parish records and county archives. Since then several more full-scale biographies have appeared, either taking advantage of the inclusive and all-embracing social history or turning to literary psychoanalysis for a much less conventional figure of Jane Austen. With the burgeoning development of cultural studies, her current biographers are juxtaposing novel-reading,criticism and historical research, presenting a more lively version of Jane Austen, and producing a variety of invaluable appreciations of her fictional world.
