As the first article in crits published in 1966,'Seminar on ‘The Purloined Letter''is Lacan's response to the 'repetition compulsion ' mentioned in Freud 's Beyond the Pleasure Principle. In this article,Lacan expatiates upon the decisive influence of the signifier on the construction of the subject onthree levels: the subject,the intersubjectivity and the symbolic order. Lacan further reveals the connotations of Freud's death instinct in the mechanism of the symbolic repetition.
